Wrocław Cathedral, Gothic cathedral in Ostrów Tumski, Poland.
Wrocław Cathedral is a Gothic religious building in Ostrów Tumski, a historic island district in central Wrocław, Poland. Two towers on the western facade rise 98 meters with pointed spires, and large rose windows decorate the front of the structure.
The fourth church on this site was begun in 1244 and reconstructed after heavy damage from World War II bombardments. Restoration of the structure took several decades and followed the original Gothic forms.
The building holds the tombs of Silesian rulers, bishops and aristocrats spanning several centuries. Visitors can walk through side chapels where carved gravestones and memorial plaques tell the story of the region's past.
Access is through three entrances on the west, north and south sides, all leading into the interior hall. Visitors can climb the north tower for wide views over the city but should expect a steep staircase.
Inside the building stands the largest pipe organ in Poland, built in 1913 by E.F. Walcker & Sons of Ludwigsburg for Centennial Hall. The instrument was later moved here and remains one of the finest sounding organs in the country.
