Bukowsko, Administrative village in Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland.
Bukowsko is a village in Sanok County, in the Subcarpathian region of southern Poland, set in hilly terrain. It serves as the seat of a rural commune that covers several surrounding settlements.
Bukowsko was founded in the 14th century and for a long time remained a quiet farming settlement in the foothills. In 1946, much of the village was burned down during clashes involving Ukrainian nationalist forces, which shaped much of what the place looks like today.
The name comes from the Slavic word 'buk', meaning beech, pointing to the forests that surround the settlement. Walking through the area today, you can see how closely daily life here is tied to the wooded hills nearby.
The village is served by a railway line linking the region to Slovakia, which makes it reachable by train. The surrounding hills and forest paths are most comfortable to walk in spring and summer.
The local Catholic cemetery has gravestones carved with Cyrillic letters, left by Rusyn families who once lived in the area. Most visitors pass through without noticing them, yet they point to a past when several different communities shared this small corner of the Carpathians.
