Church of the Dormition in Szczawne, Eastern Orthodox church in Szczawne, Poland
The Church of the Dormition is a wooden structure with a rectangular chancel, square nave, and narthex covered by vertical weatherboards over its log walls. A low tower sits atop the roof, reflecting the traditional design of this region.
The building was constructed between 1888 and 1889 by carpenter Hojsan from Płonna, representing northeastern Lemko architectural traditions. It reflects the establishment of Orthodox faith communities in this area during the late 1800s.
The interior walls display paintings created by artists who arrived from Ukraine and completed their work in the 1920s. This artistic presence reflects how the community absorbed people and traditions from beyond its borders.
The church sits roughly 150 meters from the main road on a hillside near the Osława River and is visible from above. The site includes a cemetery and bell tower that mark it as a religious gathering place.
An inscription on the northern vestibule wall records the names of the artists who painted the interior. This dedication preserves the memory of those whose work might otherwise be forgotten.
