Rzeszów Castle, Castle in Rzeszów, Poland
Rzeszów Castle is a fortress in the city of Rzeszów with a square structure built around a central courtyard and a striking gatehouse about 55 meters tall, crowned by a Baroque dome. The complex features four corner bastion fortifications that together formed the original defensive system.
The fortress was founded around 1600 and underwent major transformation from wooden defenses to solid stone walls built under the supervision of Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza around 1620. This building project marked the shift from temporary to permanent defensive structures.
The walls inside display memorial plaques honoring those who died under Stalinism and lawyers persecuted during wartime. These plaques serve as quiet reminders of the difficult past that visitors notice while exploring the fortress.
The site is now used as a courthouse, which means visiting hours and access for tourists may be limited. Check ahead about visiting opportunities, especially if you want to see the interior spaces.
The gatehouse and four corner bastions are the only surviving parts of the original complex, while the rest of the grounds changed through later rebuilding. This fragmented appearance tells the story of the many transformations the structure went through over the centuries.
