Rynek Underground permanent exhibition, Historical underground museum at Main Market Square, Krakow, Poland.
This permanent exhibition is a museum four meters below the Main Market Square in Krakow, displaying archaeological finds and remains of medieval structures. The exhibition spaces extend across several areas with display cases, floor mosaics, and illuminated foundations from the medieval period.
Archaeologists excavated beneath the marketplace between 2005 and 2010, uncovering foundations of dwellings and workshops from the 13th century. The discoveries made it possible to open a permanent exhibition showing the development of the city.
The museum's name refers to its location directly beneath the old marketplace and the medieval trade routes visible there. Visitors today see reconstructions of workshops and stalls that show how merchants sold their goods.
The museum is open daily except on certain public holidays, and the entrance is located on Rynek Główny. The visit typically lasts about an hour, and the rooms are accessible for wheelchairs.
One section of the exhibition displays graves in which bodies were buried with special precautions to prevent the return of the dead. This burial practice was widespread in the Middle Ages and reflects folk beliefs that are still documented today through the preserved skeletons.
