Zielony Balonik, Literary cabaret in Kraków, Poland.
Zielony Balonik, meaning "The Green Balloon", was a cabaret that took place inside the Jama Michalika restaurant in the Old Town of Kraków. Performances brought together satirical texts, drawings, poetry, songs, and puppet shows in front of a small, carefully selected audience.
The cabaret was founded on October 7, 1905, at a time when Poland was divided between three empires and Polish artists used art as a way to keep their identity alive. It ran regularly until 1912, with a few more performances taking place until 1915.
The cabaret was closely tied to the Young Poland movement, a circle of writers, poets, and painters active in Kraków around 1900. Humor and satire gave these artists a way to address topics that were difficult to discuss openly in public.
The Jama Michalika restaurant, where the cabaret took place, sits on Floriańska Street in Kraków's Old Town, a short walk from St. Florian's Gate. A visit works well alongside the surrounding street, since many of the buildings nearby still date from the same period.
Anyone who did not laugh or applaud enthusiastically enough during a show was simply not invited back. This unwritten rule kept the group very small and gave the evenings an unusually free tone that would have been hard to maintain in a larger setting.
