Artillery Arsenal

Artillery Arsenal, Military storage building in Old Town, Kraków, Poland.

The Artillery Arsenal is a large brick building with two-story corner sections connected by single-story segments that run along Grodzka Street. The structure features three entrance gates and thick walls designed to safely store military equipment and weaponry.

King Sigismund I commissioned the construction of this arsenal in 1531 to store cannons captured during the Battle of Obertyn against Moldavia. The building was established as a permanent structure and adapted over subsequent centuries to meet changing military storage needs.

The building now houses the Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World, serving as a venue for language courses and cultural exchange. Visitors can experience the spaces during university events and feel the international role this institution plays within Jagiellonian University.

The building is accessible during Jagiellonian University events and operating hours, offering insight into language programs and cultural activities. It is best to contact the university beforehand or join guided tours of the Old Town area to arrange access.

The structure preserves original vaulted halls from the 17th century and a monumental portal from the same period, integrated into what were once medieval city walls. These architectural remnants show how military buildings were connected to the city's defensive fortifications.
