Manufaktura, Building complex in Bałuty-Centrum, Łódź, Poland
Manufaktura is a building complex in Bałuty-Centrum, Łódź, Poland, standing on a former factory site with 13 historical brick buildings and a contemporary glass and steel shopping center. The site spreads across a large area in central Łódź and connects 19th-century architecture with modern structures.
The textile works were built in 1889 by Izrael Poznański and were once one of the largest factories in Europe. After decades of vacancy, a comprehensive redevelopment began in 2006 that transformed the site into a retail and cultural center.
The name comes from the original use as a textile manufactory, and today old factory halls merge with retail spaces to form a lively urban quarter. Visitors see the contrast between red brick and modern glass, while locals shop, eat or go to the cinema here.
The site is easy to reach on foot and the paths between buildings are accessible. Most shops and facilities are open daily, with peak times in the afternoon and on weekends.
The central square holds a fountain that runs for 300 meters and ranks among the longest in Europe. In summer the square turns into a beach zone with sand, in winter it becomes an ice rink.
