Hala Na Koszykach, Art Nouveau market hall in central Warsaw, Poland
Hala Na Koszykach is a market hall in central Warsaw built to serve as a commercial center, featuring a three-story structure with original architectural details. The building displays metalwork lattices, sculpted decorative elements, and brick walls that were carefully restored to show their original character.
Architect Juliusz Dzierżanowski designed and built this market hall between 1906 and 1909 during Warsaw's period of commercial growth. The structure suffered significant damage during World War II in 1944, yet was eventually rebuilt and stands today as a monument to the city's trading heritage.
The name refers to baskets, honoring the market's roots as a place where vendors sold goods in woven containers. Today you walk through spaces where locals and visitors mix, browsing food stalls and sitting down to eat together.
The hall is easily accessible on foot and has multiple entrances from different streets. Inside you will find restaurants, cafés, and food vendors with seating areas scattered throughout, making it easy to explore at your own pace.
During restoration, individual bricks from the damaged original structure were carefully saved and woven back into the rebuilt walls. This creates a subtle blend where you can spot patches of older and newer brickwork if you look closely.
