Rezerwat przyrody Zamczysko, Nature reserve in Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Poland.
Rezerwat przyrody Zamczysko is a 14.55 hectare nature reserve located on Wysokówki Mountain with a mixed forest of beech, fir, sycamore, hornbeam, and sessile oak. The trees form a layered forest structure that covers the slopes with dense vegetation.
The reserve was established in 1959 by the Ministry of Forestry to protect an archaeological site containing remains from a 10th century worship center. The protection designation has preserved both the forest composition and the cultural layer beneath it.
An archaeological site within the reserve contains remains linked to worship practices of Mokosh, a Slavic deity. The physical traces of this spiritual place are still visible beneath the forest canopy.
The reserve is located between Makoszyn and Widełki villages in Bieliny commune and maintains strict protection status without forestry management. This means the forest grows naturally without intervention, creating a wilderness-like experience.
Some beech trees in this forest are over 220 years old and represent a rare lowland variant of Carpathian beech forest found nowhere else in the region. These ancient trees create an unusual forest type that makes the reserve botanically distinct.
