Stefan Starzynski Nature reserve Kabacki forest, Nature reserve in southern Warsaw, Poland
Stefan Starzynski Nature reserve Kabacki forest is a protected woodland area covering more than 900 hectares in the southern part of the capital. Pines, oaks and birches form a dense canopy here, with some trees more than 130 years old.
The area was established as a protected zone to preserve old trees and biodiversity from city expansion. Later it was named after the mayor who fought for the population during the war.
The woods carry the name of Stefan Starzyński, the mayor who defended civilians during the 1939 siege. Today visitors see birds, squirrels and other animals that have found shelter here despite the proximity to the city center.
Two cycling routes run through the entire area and offer guidance when exploring. Access is easiest via Kabaty metro station on the northern edge.
One part of the woods is called Powsin and used by families for walks and picnics. This section connects directly to the botanical garden, so you can walk from the trees into the collections.
