Schronisko PTTK na Hali Ornak, Mountain shelter in Western Tatra Mountains, Poland
Schronisko PTTK na Hali Ornak is a mountain hut in the Koscieliska Valley of the Western Tatra Mountains in Poland, sitting at around 1,100 m (3,600 ft) above sea level. It has dormitory-style rooms sleeping between two and eight people, along with a dining area that serves hot meals.
The hut was built in 1947 and 1948 to replace an earlier shelter destroyed during World War II, continuing a tradition of mountain hospitality in this valley that goes back well before the war. Its construction was part of a broader effort to rebuild mountain tourism in Poland after the conflict.
The hut sits in a valley that has been used by shepherds and hikers for generations, and that sense of continuity is still present today. In the morning and evening, the trails around it fill with walkers heading into or returning from the mountains.
The hut is reached on foot along a marked trail through the Koscieliska Valley, starting from a parking area near the valley entrance. Mountain weather can change fast here, so sturdy footwear and a waterproof layer are worth bringing even on a clear day.
The hut was designed by architect Anna Gorska, which was rare for mountain construction projects in Poland at the time. Her design drew on the Zakopane style, a regional approach to building that uses steeply pitched roofs and wooden details typical of the highland region.
