Stara Baba

Stara Baba is a water reservoir formed in a former clay pit in the Rudnicze district of Poznań. Dense reed beds line the shores while willows and poplars grow around the perimeter.

The pond emerged from extensive clay excavations for brick production during Poznań's construction boom in the early 1900s. Mining operations gradually transformed the industrial site into a natural habitat.

The name Stara Baba comes from Polish folklore and means Old Woman in local language. This name reflects regional stories and shapes how residents think of this place.

The site receives water from the Skórzyna stream and sits within the Kopanina I ecological reserve. Multiple paths allow you to walk around the shores and explore the different sections of this habitat.

In 2006, researchers documented European beavers establishing their territory in this post-industrial water body. This discovery shows how wildlife reclaims such transformed landscapes.
