The Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicolas, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Centrum District, Białystok, Poland.
The Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicolas is a brick church in the classical style, located in the center of Białystok on Lipowa Street, topped by a central dome. The building reaches 40 meters in height, making it one of the tallest structures in that part of the city.
The cathedral was built between 1843 and 1846 on the site of an older Uniate church that had stood there since the 18th century. The new brick structure replaced the earlier building entirely and adopted a classical design that remains largely unchanged today.
The cathedral serves as the main religious gathering place for the local Orthodox Christian community and houses the relics of Saint Gabriel. Visitors can experience the daily prayer life and traditions of the Eastern Church within these walls.
The cathedral is generally open on weekdays, when visitors can enter and look around without interrupting any service. On Sundays and feast days, liturgies take place and access for those not attending the service may be limited.
In 1991, Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral, a rare case of a Catholic pope entering an Orthodox place of worship on Polish soil. The relics of Saint Gabriel are also kept here and draw Orthodox pilgrims from across the region.
