Stary Rynek we Włocławku
Stary Rynek in Włocławek is a rectangular market square in the city center surrounded by 19th-century buildings and bordered by main streets such as Tumska and 3 Maja. The space features lawns, bushes, ornamental cherry trees, and horse-chestnuts, along with new benches and street lamps that were added during a renovation completed in 2013.
A small brick town hall stood on the square in the mid-1800s until its demolition in 1872, followed by the Hotel 'Three Crowns,' which served as a social gathering place until 1918. During World War II, German forces destroyed several older buildings to open views toward the river, fundamentally altering the square's character.
The square is easily accessible and serves as a central meeting point in the downtown area with direct connections to surrounding streets and shops. Visitors find seating areas, good lighting, and a level paved surface suitable for pedestrians of all abilities.
The square contains engraved stones on the ground showing the outlines of buildings destroyed during the war, allowing visitors to visualize the lost architecture of the past. These markings tell the story of wartime losses and help people understand the extent of destruction that reshaped this place.
