Łomża Fortress, Military fortress in Łomża, Poland
Łomża Fortress is a military stronghold along the Narew River made up of concrete bunkers, trenches, and defensive earthworks spread across an extended area. The structures show typical engineering methods used in early twentieth century fortification design.
The fortress was built by the Russian Imperial Army before World War One as a strategic defense along the western frontier of the Russian Empire. The site later saw significant military action when German forces attacked during the opening weeks of World War Two.
The fortress grounds serve as a place where visitors can experience the traces of military history through the structures that remain. Local residents view these remains as an important part of their regional identity and collective memory.
The site is walkable from Łomża city center via marked trails that wind through the grounds of the old fortress. Guided visits are regularly organized during warmer months and provide better context for understanding the different structures.
Polish troops here held off multiple German attacks before executing an organized retreat in the opening days of the conflict. This resistance was among the first armed clashes on Polish soil when the war began.
