Słup Lake, body of water
Słup Lake is an artificial reservoir on the Nysa Szalona river with a shoreline stretching nearly 19 kilometers, consisting of two main sections connected by a narrow passage. The water is held back by a dam approximately 21 meters high and is surrounded by meadows, reed beds, and willow trees, while the deeper lower section features narrow strips of reeds along its edges.
The dam was constructed in 1978 on the Nysa Szalona river to protect the city of Legnica and surrounding areas from flooding. Two villages, Brachów and Żarek, along with a former palace were submerged during the creation of the reservoir, with a commemorative obelisk now replicated on the shore to mark the historical sites beneath the water.
Local fishing clubs regularly gather here and share techniques passed down through generations of anglers. The lake serves as a gathering place for families and friends during the warmer months, where fishing and outdoor traditions remain central to community life.
The lake can be reached by car from nearby towns using local roads, with parking areas available near fishing spots and along main paths. The best fishing season runs from June to October during early morning or late afternoon hours when fish are most active and the surroundings remain peaceful.
An obelisk commemorating the 1813 Napoleonic battle lies submerged beneath the water, marking a historical event that occurred at this site before the area was flooded. This connection between history and modern flood protection creates a place where past and present meet beneath the surface.
