Zamek Pieniński

Zamek Pieniński is a castle ruin located on Zamkowa Mountain in the Pieniny Mountains, with stone walls and tower foundations still standing. The remains sit at a high elevation and offer views across the surrounding landscape.

The castle was built before 1241 and served as a stronghold during turbulent medieval times. It provided refuge for Princess Kinga and members of a religious community during a major invasion from the east in the late 13th century.

The chapel within the ruins connects visitors to the region's spiritual traditions that span centuries. Local pilgrims still visit this sacred space, making it a living part of the community's faith today.

A marked hiking path leads visitors up to the ruins from the nearby town, with the complete route taking around four hours. The trail is steep and requires proper footwear and a moderate level of fitness.

Excavations uncovered bones from extinct animals, pottery fragments, and metal objects that show people used this location far earlier than the medieval fortress period. These discoveries reveal a deeper and older history than the well-known castle era.
