Castle of Bishops in Siewierz, Medieval castle in Siewierz, Poland.

The Castle of Bishops in Siewierz is a brick fortress with stone walls built on a man-made hill near the Czarna Przemsza River. The structure includes a gate tower, defensive walls, and an outer fortification, while the basement level holds historical displays.

The fortress began in the 13th century as a wooden structure built by local castle guards and was later rebuilt in brick by the Dukes of Bytom. This transformation reflected broader changes in regional defense and power during medieval times.

The name comes from the bishops of Krakow who took control in 1443 and ruled this place as their own territory. You can still see traces of this church authority in the fortress design, from the thick walls to the defensive towers.

The entrance features a working wooden drawbridge you can cross, and the gate tower offers a viewing platform with views of the surroundings. Wear sturdy shoes for comfortable exploration, especially if the ground is wet or uneven.

The castle has one of the few functioning medieval drawbridge systems in Poland that visitors can actually experience in action. This working mechanism shows how medieval builders engineered access and defense together.
