Wieża Górnośląska w Poznaniu, Water tower at Poznań International Fair, Poland
The Wieża Górnośląska is a steel structure at the Poznań International Fair featuring a distinctive sixteen-sided geometric form and weighing 1,375 tons. The tower originally housed a water tank in its upper section that stored and distributed water to surrounding neighborhoods.
The tower was built in 1911 for an East German Industrial Exhibition and served as a water storage facility for city development. In 1947, the upper water tank section was removed while the lower portion remained, later serving different purposes.
The tower shapes the fairground's appearance with its distinctive sixteen-sided form that catches visitors' eyes immediately. This striking outline makes it a landmark for those walking through the exhibition grounds.
The tower stands centrally within the fairground and is easily reached from multiple pathways. Since the area is expansive, orienting yourself by building coordinates helps you locate the structure quickly.
The tower inspired German filmmaker Fritz Lang, who incorporated design elements from it into his 1927 film Metropolis. This unusual architecture thus shaped how futuristic cinema looked during that era.
