Cricoteka, Cultural center in Podgorze, Krakow, Poland.
The Cricoteka is a cultural center located in Podgorze that occupies a former power station with its original industrial structure preserved inside. A modern suspended structure hovers above the historic building, creating a dialogue between old and new architecture alongside the Vistula River.
The center was founded in 1980 to preserve the artistic legacy of the Cricot 2 theater ensemble and its theatrical innovations. It documents decades of experimental work that shaped Polish theater and visual arts throughout the late twentieth century.
The exhibitions feature costumes, stage props, and set designs from the Cricot 2 theater's decades of performances displayed throughout the galleries. Walking through these spaces helps you understand the visual world that defined this experimental ensemble's approach to theater.
The center is open Tuesday through Sunday, with a bookstore and café located on the top floor where you can rest and enjoy views of the city. The industrial setting means high ceilings and open spaces that are easy to navigate.
The artist's former studio and living quarters on Sienna Street remain unchanged with his personal belongings and notebooks still present in the rooms. These preserved spaces offer a glimpse into the daily workspace and home life of this influential figure.
