Saint Matthew church in Mielec

Saint Matthew is a minor basilica in Mielec featuring a prominent tower and lantern that rise above the Old Market Square. The building displays a mix of construction periods, with stone and brick elements shaping its appearance.

The structure began as a wooden building in 1470 and was later expanded with stone additions in 1595, with Saint Anna's chapel marking the first permanent extension. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI granted it the status of a minor basilica.

The church bears the name of Apostle Matthew and occupies a central place in Mielec's urban layout. Visitors can observe the burial sites of the Mielecki family in the basement, members who served as senators in previous centuries.

The basilica sits near the Old Market Square and is easy to reach through the central streets. Visitors should note that regular Catholic services take place and timing should be planned accordingly.

The grounds are surrounded by an 18th-century wall featuring detailed depictions of the Passion of Christ. These wall elements form a connected visual narrative around the property perimeter.
