Śluza Bartoszowice
The Śluza Bartoszowice is a lock on the Odra River in Wrocław that allows boats and ships to move between different water levels. The structure features large steel gates and concrete walls spanning about 188 meters in length and 10 meters in width, managing a water level difference of over 3 meters.
The lock was built in 1914 as part of a project to improve the city's water routes and connect different parts of the infrastructure. In 2006, flood gates were added to protect the area, and a historic steel walkway was moved here from the Lipki location in 2004.
The lock bears the name of the Bartoszowice area and serves as a daily landmark for people living and working near the river. It represents how the city has relied on water routes for trade and transportation, making river navigation a visible part of local life.
The lock is easily accessible via walkways and small roads where visitors can observe the operations up close. It operates throughout the day, with schedules typically posted nearby for those wishing to watch the gates in action.
A historic steel walkway moved here in 2004 from the former Lipki lock site represents a rare piece of relocated industrial heritage at the lock. This unexpected addition connects two different chapters of the city's water infrastructure and creates a tangible link to the region's engineering past.
