University of Wrocław Institute of Romance Studies, composante de la faculté des lettres de Wrocław

The University of Wrocław Institute of Romance Studies is an academic department housed in a historic building on Plac Biskupa Nankiera that teaches languages and literature of Romance countries. Inside you find wide hallways, rooms filled with books and computers, a substantial library covering French, Spanish, and Italian, and common areas where students gather to study and discuss their work.

Teaching of Romance languages began here in 1945 after World War II with a handful of students and teachers who relocated from other cities. The program expanded during the 1960s and 1970s, gained institute status in 1973, and later added specializations in Italian, Spanish, and translation studies.

The institute's name reflects its focus on Romance languages and cultures, which you can sense throughout the building in the activities and gatherings that happen there. Students and staff organize language exchanges and cultural events that bring the traditions of France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal into the daily life of the university community.

The location sits on a central square near the city center and is easily accessible by public transport, surrounded by cafes, shops, and historic buildings worth exploring. Visitors should note that the building is most active during term time and that updated elevators and staircases make navigation straightforward even when the halls are busy.

The building's origins trace back to the early 13th century, and over the centuries it served as a residence, government office, shops, and apartments before becoming a teaching space in 1945. Walking through corridors where so many different purposes unfolded adds a layer of discovery to studying languages in a place layered with its own history.
