The Kompleks zamkowo-pałacowy w Żarach is a castle and palace complex in Żary, in southwestern Poland, combining a medieval fortress core with a later residential palace. Gothic and Renaissance details mark its facades and courtyards, while surviving sections of walls and towers give the site a strong sense of its former defensive purpose.
A stone fortification was first raised here in the 13th century, and the Biberstein family greatly enlarged the site during the 14th century. Ownership passed through several noble families over the following centuries, each leaving architectural marks that can still be read in the buildings today.
The complex today hosts local concerts, markets, and exhibitions that bring the people of Żary into its courtyards and halls. Walking through the grounds, visitors can see how a medieval space has been woven into the everyday life of the town.
The site can be explored on foot, and a walk through the courtyards, walls, and garden areas takes roughly an hour at a relaxed pace. Comfortable shoes are worth wearing, as some sections have uneven surfaces that can become slippery after rain.
Beneath the palace section, original Gothic vaulted cellars from the earliest phase of construction have survived and can still be visited. These underground spaces were used for centuries in ways that changed with each owner, making them a rare and tangible trace of the building's oldest layer.
