The Church of St. Mary features a three-nave hall design with exterior decorations made from glazed bricks and reaches a height of 102.6 meters.
Construction of the present Gothic church began around 1390, with the chancel consecrated in 1407 and the naves completed in 1459 under architect Hinrich Brunsberg.
The church interior originally contained twenty altars with vaults and walls decorated with polychromes and stained-glass windows depicting biblical narratives.
Visitors can access an observation deck on the church tower and attend concerts and exhibitions held regularly within the restored building.
The church structure incorporates granite blocks in its foundation and features a distinctive Flemish bond brick pattern throughout its exterior walls.
