Magura, Hill summit near Owczary, Poland
Magura is a hill summit in the Beskid Niski range of southern Poland, rising to around 813 meters above sea level. It sits close to the village of Owczary and is reached by a blue trail that passes through forest and open clearings.
The Beskid Niski region, where Magura stands, was home for centuries to Lemko communities who lived in the villages around these hills. Their forced displacement in the mid-20th century left the area sparsely settled, and traces of their presence, like old churches, can still be found nearby.
Magura sits within the Beskid Niski range, a mountain area known for its gentle slopes and small villages scattered across green valleys. At the foot of the hill in Owczary stands a wooden Orthodox church that visitors pass on the way to the trailhead.
The walk starts from the village of Owczary, where the blue trail begins and leads up to the summit. Good footwear is recommended because some sections of the path are steep, and in winter the ground can be slippery.
Although Magura is one of many summits in the Beskid Niski range, its top offers open views over the surrounding ridges that are rarely crowded. The land around the summit shows traces of old pastoral use, which gives it a more open look than the thickly forested hills nearby.
