Sobieszewski Bridge, Pontoon bridge in Gdańsk, Poland
The Sobieszewski Bridge was a pontoon crossing over the Martwa Wisła in Gdańsk, built with nine spans to allow river traffic beneath it. Its floating structure made it distinct from conventional fixed bridges in the area.
The structure opened in 1973 to serve as a key transport link across the river. It operated for 45 years before being decommissioned and replaced in 2018.
The bridge holds three different names across languages: Most Sobieszewski in Polish, Sobieszewski Bridge in English, and Sobieszewski-Brücke in German.
The original bridge no longer exists, having been dismantled in 2018. A new fixed bridge now stands at the same location, continuing the river crossing function.
The pontoon design was an uncommon choice for river crossings in Eastern Europe, making this structure notable from an engineering perspective. The floating system allowed flexibility in handling varying water levels.
