Józef Piłsudski Bridge in Toruń

The Józef Piłsudski Bridge crosses the Vistula River with a total length of 898 meters, built from a steel truss structure with varying span lengths. The bridge carries vehicular traffic as well as pedestrian and cycling paths across the river.

The structure opened in 1934 and incorporated steel materials from another bridge that had been dismantled elsewhere. Following damage during World War II, the bridge underwent reconstruction to restore its function.

The bridge carries the name of a political figure, though local residents preferred a different choice. This naming reflects how some public spaces received their designations through official decisions rather than popular preference.

Following a 2022 renovation, the bridge features wide paths for pedestrians and cyclists along with viewing areas. Elevators and ramps ensure people with mobility restrictions can access all sections without difficulty.

The bridge was partially built from steel components that came from another bridge dismantled in a different location. This reuse of materials was a practical way to save resources during the construction period.
