Most w Opaleniu, Railway bridge across Vistula River in Opalenie, Poland
Weichselbrücke bei Marienwerder is a steel railway bridge stretching 1058 meters across the Vistula River with ten spans featuring half-parabolic arches of 132 meters each. The structure was designed to carry both rail traffic and pedestrians, showcasing early 20th century engineering techniques used for major water crossings.
Three German companies built the bridge between 1905 and 1909 as part of a railway line connecting eastern territories to western markets. Railway operations stopped in 1926 following post-World War I border changes, which fundamentally altered its role.
The bridge represented an engineering milestone in early 20th century European railway infrastructure, connecting communities across the Vistula River.
Access to the bridge is limited today since active railway operations ended and the structure is now protected as a historical monument. Visitors can view and photograph the architecture from surrounding areas and combine the visit with other nearby attractions in the region.
After railway operations ceased, parts of the steel structure were dismantled in 1934 and reused to construct another bridge elsewhere in Poland. This salvage demonstrates how valuable steel was at the time and how practical engineers were about repurposing materials.
