Zoo in Braniewo, Zoological park in Braniewo, Poland.
The zoo in Braniewo occupied the medieval moat of the town, positioned opposite the 18th century Bishop Potocki Palace and close to St. Catherine of Alexandria Basilica. The facility displayed mammals and birds in several sections spread across the historic site.
The origins date to 1892 when a German botanist established a botanical garden on the site, which gradually transformed into a zoological facility. This shift happened in 1959 and shaped the place for the following decades.
The place served as a learning space where visitors could discover animals and their habitats through direct observation. Local families came here to introduce children to wildlife and natural environments.
The site operated seasonally from May through September and was best explored on foot, as the different sections were spread across the historic grounds. Its proximity to other sights like Bishop Potocki Palace allowed visitors to see multiple locations in one outing.
The zoo held the distinction of being the only animal exhibition in the Warmian-Masurian region for many years, drawing visitors from across a wide area. After operating for generations, the facility eventually closed and now remains a historical reminder of the town's recreational heritage.
