Polder Buków, Flood control reservoir in Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.
Polder Buków is a flood control installation along the Odra River in Silesian Voivodeship that captures water during extreme water levels. The system consists of two areas separated by an embankment that work together to store large amounts of water and release it gradually.
The project was built between 1989 and 2002 and required the relocation of an entire community to make room for the facility. Its completion marked the beginning of a new phase of modern flood protection in the region.
This water retention system reflects Poland's commitment to environmental protection and water management, establishing new standards for flood prevention infrastructure.
The facility is accessible during river flooding and offers viewing points where you can observe the function of the protective structure. Walking along the embankment provides an overview of the entire system and surrounding landscape.
During the 2010 floods, the installation demonstrated its full capacity by storing huge amounts of water and noticeably reducing river flow downstream. This event proved in practice how important such systems are for protecting areas further down the river.
