Racibórz Dolny, Flood control reservoir in Racibórz, Poland.
Racibórz Dolny is a detention reservoir along the Odra River with a capacity of around 185 million cubic meters spread across approximately 26 square kilometers of water surface. A dam system extending roughly 20 kilometers forms the structural foundation of this flood control facility.
Planning for this flood control infrastructure began in 1880 following devastating floods, ultimately leading to completion and inauguration in June 2020. The lengthy period between initial concept and final realization reflects the project's considerable complexity.
The construction required relocating residents from two villages, with Nieboczowy being entirely rebuilt in a new location between 2014 and 2019. This displacement shaped the region's identity and remains part of local memory today.
The site is publicly accessible with several viewpoints along the dam system offering views across the water surface. Visitors should expect variable water levels, particularly after heavy rainfall or during flood seasons.
The facility initiated its first operational water retention on September 15, 2024, at 4:20 AM, responding to rising water levels at the Krzyżanowice gauge station. This moment marked the beginning of its protective function after years of preparation.
