The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a brick Baroque building with an ornamental facade and decorative details typical of religious architecture from this period. The structure was constructed over several phases and stands today alongside an adjoining monastery complex in the town center.

The first wooden church and Carmelite monastery were founded in 1641 by court marshal Adam Kazanowski and burned in a fire in 1779. A brick church and monastery were built on the same site between 1779 and 1794, with two towers added in 1794. After the partitions, Prussian authorities dissolved the monastery in 1802 and turned it into a prison; in 1866–1920 the church served as an Orthodox cathedral.

The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her connection to Mount Carmel, a sacred location in Christian tradition. Visitors can sense this devotion through the interior decoration and regular worship services that continue to shape daily life in this building.

In 1866–1920 the church served as the Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, and its towers were rebuilt in Byzantine style; in 1959 their domed tops were replaced with Baroque cupolas. The monastery next door became a tsarist prison where Polish January Uprising insurgents were held.
