Saint John the Baptist church in Malbork

Saint John the Baptist church in Malbork, Gothic church in Malbork, Poland

Saint John the Baptist is a brick church in Malbork's Old Town featuring a wooden bell tower from the 1520s. The structure stands as a notable religious building in the historic district with its Gothic forms visible from surrounding streets.

An earlier church stood at this location from the 13th century until it was destroyed during the Thirteen Years' War. The building was reconstructed in 1468, marking the restoration of religious life in the recovering town.

The church houses medieval artworks including a limestone sculpture of Saint Elizabeth of Turin and two 14th-century granite baptismal fonts. These objects show the religious craftsmanship that has been preserved within these walls across the centuries.

The church is located in the Old Town district of Malbork and is easily reachable on foot from the city center. Visitors can enter outside of services, but should respect the space as an active place of worship.

This was the first religious building constructed beyond the walls of Malbork Castle during the medieval period. Its location shows how the town began expanding beyond the castle fortifications and when the urban core developed.
