Nazi gold train, Urban legend in Wałbrzych, Poland

The train is an urban legend about a convoy filled with gold, artworks, and treasures supposedly hidden in tunnels beneath the Owl Mountains near Wałbrzych. The story refers to an underground network constructed during World War II that now runs through the Nowa Ruda area.

German forces allegedly hid the convoy in 1945 during their retreat from the Red Army inside a tunnel system built as part of Project Riese. Reports about the missing transport have circulated since the end of the war, but no expedition has been able to prove its existence.

The tale has drawn treasure hunters from across Europe for decades, digging through forests around Wałbrzych in search of clues. Local tour guides use the story to lead visitors through the underground sites and keep interest in the region alive.

The tunnels near Książ Castle can be visited through organized tours that explain Project Riese and the legend. Some sections lie deep underground and require sturdy footwear and warm clothing, as temperatures stay low throughout the year.

Ground-penetrating radar studies in 2015 revealed natural geological formations that were initially mistaken for the outline of a buried convoy. The readings nonetheless triggered a wave of media attention and led to official excavations at several forest locations.
