Castle in Lipienek

Castle in Lipienek is a medieval fortress whose remains stand on a promontory once surrounded by the waters of Lake Zamkowe. The surviving sections include foundations of the high castle and the southern wall of the northern wing.

Built in the 13th century, the fortress served as the residence of the Teutonic commander of the Chelmno region starting in 1285. It held this role until 1335.

The structure reflects architectural traditions of the Teutonic Order, with a regular layout typical of medieval military fortifications. The design follows principles used in order strongholds throughout this region.

Access to the castle ruins requires permission from the landowner, as the site sits on private property. Visitors should explore the grounds carefully, mindful of the fragile archaeological remains and the surrounding landscape.

Archaeological investigations in 1992 uncovered no evidence of an earlier hillfort at this location. This contradicted previous assumptions about the site's settlement history.
