Piwnica Gorywodów, Gothic house with medieval basements in Bytom, Poland
Piwnica Gorywodów is a Gothic house with medieval cellars beneath Bytom's central area. The underground rooms feature pointed arches and vaulted ceilings built from local stone with typical Gothic details.
The building was constructed around 1400 as a storage place for wine merchants. A residential section with a baroque facade was added above the cellars and remained part of the structure for centuries.
The cellars show skilled craftsmanship from their time through carefully shaped arches and vaults. They tell the story of workers who built solid underground spaces that have lasted for centuries.
The cellars are located underground beneath the old town and are not easy to find on your own. Visiting with a local guide helps you understand the architectural details and the space more fully.
The cellars were rediscovered in 1953 during restoration work after being hidden for a long time. They were named after the Gorziwoda brothers who later operated a coffee roasting business in the space.
