Savage Islands, Volcanic archipelago in North Atlantic Ocean, Portugal.

The Savage Islands form a volcanic archipelago in the North Atlantic between Madeira and the Canary Islands, administered by Portugal. The two larger landmasses are Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena, while several smaller rocks and reefs complete the group spanning nearly three square kilometers.

Portuguese navigator Diogo Gomes de Sintra encountered the islands in 1438 during early Atlantic expeditions. For centuries they served as a source of lichens harvested for dye production before Portugal declared them a nature reserve in 1971.

The name derives from the Portuguese word for wild or untamed, describing the harsh conditions on these uninhabited rocks. Today biologists use a small station on Selvagem Grande as a base for field studies on migratory birds and marine life.

Visiting requires a special permit from Portuguese authorities because the archipelago is under strict conservation rules. The crossing takes several hours from Madeira and depends heavily on weather conditions, so spontaneous trips are not possible.

The surrounding waters host numerous endemic species and form one of the largest breeding grounds for Cory's shearwater in the entire Atlantic. At night thousands of these birds return to their nesting burrows simultaneously, creating a dramatic natural spectacle.
