Fafe

Fafe is a municipality in northern Braga, Portugal, spread across hilly terrain with traditional villages and rural settlements. The area comprises several civil parishes with farmland, small market squares, and various public facilities.

In the 10th century, King Ordoño III of León granted the territories of Vila de Moraria and Monte Longo to Guimarães monastery, placing the region under church influence. This early connection to religious authority shaped the area's development for centuries.

The annual Feiras Francas celebration on May 16 showcases traditional livestock competitions and horse racing that have been central to local identity since the late 1700s. Visitors can experience the region's rural crafts and agricultural heritage through these events.

The area has several administrative offices, schools, and services distributed across different settlements that are easy to access. It helps to allow time for exploring the smaller villages, as the place is spread out rather than concentrated.

Between 1907 and 1986, narrow-gauge trains on the Guimarães line connected this municipality to surrounding regions before the line was closed. Some old railway buildings and remnants still recall that era of transport.
