Garajau, Marine nature reserve in Caniço, Portugal
Garajau is a marine nature reserve located along the southern coast of Madeira Island, extending to depths of 50 meters (164 feet). The protected area comprises rocky formations, sandy floors, and coral structures that provide habitat for numerous fish species and invertebrates.
The Portuguese government established this protected area in 1986 to prevent damage to the seafloor and maintain the ecological balance of coastal waters. The designation marked an important step in protecting Madeira's underwater world from overuse.
The reserve functions as a place where visitors encounter the underwater world directly and grasp how delicate marine life truly is. Local diving schools regularly use the area to introduce both beginners and experienced divers to the diversity of life below the surface.
The area is primarily accessible through diving activities, with several local diving centers offering equipment rentals and guided tours. The best conditions for diving or snorkeling occur on calm days when visibility is good near the coast.
The area is known for large populations of dusky groupers, garden eels, and seahorses that swim freely in the protected waters. This concentration of marine animals makes it a favorite spot for underwater photographers from around the world.
