Vila Viçosa

Vila Viçosa is a small town in the Alentejo region centered around a ducal palace. The settlement features whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and tree-lined plazas that radiate from the palatial complex at its heart.

The town emerged in medieval times as a seat of power and became the preferred residence of a ducal family. Its layout and importance grew from serving as the administrative and symbolic center of their domain.

The name comes from the holly trees that once covered the surrounding lands. The town grew around the ducal residence and remains a place where noble heritage and everyday village life coexist visibly.

The town is best explored on foot, as most sights cluster in the compact center. Morning visits work well to enjoy the streets before heat sets in and to spend time properly inside the main palace.

The surrounding area sits on one of Europe's largest marble deposits. This abundance of local stone shaped the architecture and economic activities of the region for centuries.
