The Coliseu dos Recreios consists of two adjoining buildings: a rectangular three-storey entrance block on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão and a twelve-sided auditorium. The hall is covered by a 100-tonne iron dome, 48.68 metres in diameter, made by Hein Lehmann & Co. in Germany and set on an octagonal masonry base with an 8-metre lantern. The facade, the last part finished, has three storeys with decorative plaster motifs and gargoyles.

Four promoters conceived the Coliseu in the late 1880s, and from 1888 a public subscription helped cover rising costs, with King D. Carlos himself buying shares. The iron dome, ordered from Hein Lehmann & Co. in Germany, was installed in 1889, and the hall opened on 14 August 1890 with Suppé's operetta Boccaccio. A 1992–1994 remodelling preceded its reopening on 26 February 1994.

The Coliseu was conceived as a popular hall with low prices, staging opera, theatre, circus and dance. During the First Republic it offered an alternative to the São Carlos opera house; in December 1916 a company organised by Ercole Casali, with Elvira de Hidalgo and Tito Schipa, made its debut there. From 1959 to 1981 lyric performances were organised with São Carlos, bringing singers such as Joan Sutherland and Alfredo Kraus to Lisbon at accessible prices.

The Coliseu dos Recreios stands at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão 92–104, in Arroios, sharing a wall with the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa. The entrance block is rectangular and the twelve-sided hall lies behind it, ringed by seating and two tiers of boxes. Capacity ranges from 2,846 seated to 5,672 standing, so check the configuration of a given show before booking.

The iron dome came from Germany, ordered from Hein Lehmann & Co. and set on a masonry octagon; with a 48.68 m diameter and 100 tonnes, it was described as the largest of its kind. The stage behind it, 40 m deep and 18 m wide, kept wooden rigging and hand-operated machinery.
