Founded in 1279 by Abbot Fernando, this former Cistercian monastery developed into one of Portugal's most prosperous female religious centers during the 16th century.
The church interior contains ten blue and white tile panels depicting scenes from Bernard de Clairvaux's life, representing Portuguese religious art traditions.
Visitors can explore the church from Tuesday through Friday between 9:30 and 12:30, then 14:00 to 18:00, with Saturday afternoons also available.
The monastery church contains a remarkable wooden choir section with 106 chairs arranged in long rows, demonstrating its past as a major female monastery.
