Caramulo museum, Automobile museum in Guardão, Portugal.
Caramulo Museum is an automobile museum in Guardão that houses more than 100 cars and motorcycles along with roughly 500 artworks in two separate buildings. The two sections display vehicle collections and artistic works in dedicated exhibition spaces in central Portugal's mountain region.
Brothers Abel and João de Lacerda founded the museum in 1959 in the mountain town of Caramulo. They created two separate exhibition areas to properly present their collections of art and vehicles.
The art collection features sculptures, furniture, ceramics, and tapestries that span from Roman times to contemporary work. Walking through these galleries, you encounter pieces from different artistic periods and encounter works by notable creators across the centuries.
The museum is easily accessible and located in a central area within the mountains of central Portugal. Visitors should allow adequate time to explore both sections since the collections are extensive.
The museum displays the official state vehicle of António de Oliveira Salazar, providing insight into a particular period of Portugal's political history. Also noteworthy is the Alba sports car, one of the few known Portuguese-built automobiles from the 1950s.
