Jardim Botânico de Lisboa
Jardim Botânico de Lisboa, Botanical garden and national monument in Santo António, Portugal.
The Jardim Botânico de Lisboa is a botanical garden and national monument in Santo António spanning four hectares. The site contains over 10,000 plant species, including cycads, tropical fig trees, and many exotic specimens from around the world.
The garden was established in 1878 on the grounds of the former Royal College of Nobles and became a center for botanical studies. It played an important role in agricultural research projects directed by the University of Lisbon.
The garden functions as a space where visitors walk among plants gathered from across the globe and experience nature's variety firsthand. You can sense here the commitment to making botanical knowledge accessible to everyone.
The garden is located near Rato metro station and is open daily, with visiting hours varying depending on the season. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the site involves considerable walking through different planted areas with varying elevations.
The site houses Europe's only butterfly greenhouse dedicated exclusively to Iberian fauna. Visitors can observe native butterfly species here in an environment modeled after their natural habitat.
