Jardim Botânico de Lisboa

The Jardim Botânico spans four hectares, containing over 10,000 plant species, including cycads, tropical fig trees, and numerous exotic specimens from worldwide locations.

Established in 1878 on the former Royal College of Nobles grounds, this garden supported botanical studies and agricultural research through the University of Lisbon.

The garden maintains a scientific collection comprising a xylotheque, herbarium of 220,000 leaves, and seed bank preserving 1,200 Portuguese plant species.

Located near Rato metro station, the garden opens daily from 9:00 to 20:00 between April and October, with reduced hours from 9:00 to 17:00 during winter months.

This botanical institution houses the sole butterfly greenhouse in Europe dedicated to Iberian fauna, allowing visitors to observe native species in their natural environment.
