Convento de Santa Maria do Bouro

The stone building features large arches, vaulted ceilings, and a central courtyard surrounded by cloisters with detailed architectural elements.

King Afonso Henriques donated the land to the Benedictine Order in 1148, and by 1195 the monastery adopted Cistercian rules under Our Lady of Assumption.

The monastery's abbot led 600 men to defend the Portela do Homem border against Galician troops during the 1383-1385 Portuguese succession crisis.

The convent now operates as a hotel with 32 rooms, offering amenities such as an outdoor pool, tennis courts, and a restaurant serving regional cuisine.

Architect Eduardo Souto Moura transformed the ruins into a hotel by creating modern spaces within the ancient walls while maintaining the original structure.
