Marinha Grande, municipality and city in Portugal
Marinha Grande is a city and municipality in the Leiria district of central Portugal, situated about ten kilometers from the sea on a flat sandy plain. It is surrounded by a large pine forest and has established infrastructure with train connections and highways linking it to larger cities.
The city emerged around 1747 as a glass manufacturing center when the first factory was established and later acquired and expanded by English entrepreneur William Stephens. This industry shaped the region's economic development and made Marinha Grande a recognized production center for fine glassware.
The name Marinha Grande refers to the large pine forest region that has shaped everyday life and work for centuries. In the streets and craft workshops, you can still see the tradition of glassmaking, which has marked generations of families and continues in local studios.
The best time to visit is outside summer months, when the city remains quieter and less crowded, though it stays peaceful year-round. Nearby beaches are easily reached by car or train, and the pine forest offers numerous walking paths and cycling routes for visitors.
The city earned the nickname Crystal City because of its over 250 companies focused on glass production and mold making, making it a European center for this craft. Visitors can see traditional glassmaking techniques practiced in original factory buildings now converted into museums.
