Monastery of Santa Maria de Maceira Dão

The Monastery of Santa Maria de Maceira Dão is a former Cistercian monastery set in the rural valley near Fornos de Maceira Dão, built from limestone and granite stone. Its church features an elliptical nave within a rectangular ground plan, with a main portico serving as the primary architectural focal point.

The monastery was founded in 1173 and joined the Cistercian Order under Alcobaça authority in 1188. It underwent major rebuilding work starting in 1613, marking a significant transformation of its structures.

The monastery shaped rural life for centuries through its extensive land holdings and agricultural management across the valley. Today visitors can sense how this institution once structured the daily rhythms of the surrounding communities.
