Igreja de Santo António de Lisboa
Igreja de Santo António de Lisboa, Baroque church in Santa Maria Maior, Portugal.
Igreja de Santo António de Lisboa is a baroque church in Santa Maria Maior with white stone walls and a prominent central dome. The interior features decorated altars and ornamental details that emphasize the religious character of the space.
The original building was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon. Architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira rebuilt the church in 1767 at the location where Saint Anthony was believed to have been born.
The church bears the name of Saint Anthony, who according to local tradition was born at this location. Visitors can see worshippers lighting candles and praying at the altars, especially on June 13 when people honor the saint.
The church has a small entrance near Lisbon Cathedral and can be easily reached on foot. Visitors should remember this is an active place of worship, so appropriate clothing and respectful behavior are important.
The crypt beneath the church displays Portuguese azulejo tiles in blue and white with inscriptions documenting a significant papal visit. These decorative tiles are a rare example of how modern events have been immortalized within a historic sanctuary.
